A Brief Overview
The responsibility of the Trauma Registrar is to ensure that data entered into the Trauma Database contains detailed, reliable, and readily accessible information needed to support the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Adult Trauma Center and other UH system hospitals with Trauma data collection and reporting. Data that is collected must detail the injury event, demographics, pre-hospital information, diagnosis, ICD-CM code, patient care, outcomes, and costs of treatment for injured patients. Data collection and reporting of Trauma outcomes and selected data elements maintained in the Trauma Registry to state and national agencies (Ohio Trauma Registry, National Trauma Data Bank) is a requirement of the American College of Surgeons for Trauma center verification. Data submission from all hospitals on the care and outcomes of the injured patient to the Ohio Trauma Registry is required by Ohio Law.
What You Will Do
- Responsible for the collection of data, data entry and maintenance of the UH trauma registry database. Primary area of responsibility is the Trauma registry at UH CMC and for other UH system hospitals based on identified need and existing agreements. Duties includes accurate abstracting of data from patients charts, assigning proper E-codes, Injury Severity Score, Abbreviated Injury Scale and ICD9 coding and preparation of registry reports
- Primary trauma data collection and subject matter expert to support research and quality initiatives for the CMC Adult Trauma Center.
- Prepares quarterly trauma data reports for non-trauma hospitals . Submits reports to the Ohio Trauma Registry and assists with annual data submission to the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) or as assigned
- Ensures compliance to the Ohio Department of Public Safety re: Trauma regulations and reporting. Continuous development to comply with the laws and regulations for trauma data collection and reporting
- Responsible for office coordination for the Trauma Center to include coordinating all Trauma Center billing (non-physician, non –patient) and tracking of revenues and disbursements. Prepares financial reports as requested. Orders and tracks supplies for the office and trauma center events; handles all accounts payable activities, timekeeping and clerical assistance to the PI coordinator and manager.
- In conjunction with the other Trauma Center staff supports sponsored events which educate internal staff and members of community on Trauma issues and outreach programs. This entails registration of participants, scheduling of speakers, fundraising, and coordinating logistics and supplies for the events

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management (Required)
Work Experience
- Trauma/Injury Registry experience (Preferred) and
- 1+ years coding experience (Preferred) and
- Experience in medical record format (Required) and
- Experience using computerized programs for data handling, knowledge in trauma registry methodology, case abstracting, data entry, ICD-9/10 CM coding (Required) and
- 1+ years experience with electronic medical records (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology and procedures is (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrates expertise in using MS Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Trauma Base software. (Required proficiency)
- Excellent Communication Skills (Required proficiency)
- Ability to type 30 WPM accurately (Required proficiency)
- Ambitious and able to work independently (Required proficiency)
- Detail-oriented, goal oriented, and able to meet deadlines with little supervision. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) (Preferred)
- Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry(CSTR) (Preferred)
