A Brief Overview
The Critical Care Paramedic is responsible for providing lifesaving and critical interventions to patients who require a higher level of care than is immediately available at any referring facility both inside or outside of the University Hospitals Health System. The Critical Care Paramedic functions at the highest levels within their scope of practice and makes advanced clinical decisions to ensure the safe and timely movement of patients across the region. The position primarily provides care to patients requiring critical care both on the ground during ambulance transport and via fixed and/or rotor wing transport in a helicopter, if needed. The Critical Care Paramedic completes both didactic and experiential learning during orientation and cares for patients of all age ranges including neonates. In addition, this position will make critical decisions while operating in austere environments that could include scene responses with public safety to stabilize and deliver care above the capabilities of typical paramedic-led 911 ALS services. The Critical Care Paramedic will invest substantial amounts of time into obtaining and maintaining advanced certifications (i.e., ALS, PALS, ITLS, PITLS, GEMS, FEMA) and will need to demonstrate procedural capabilities such as, but not limited to, rapid sequence intubation, vent management, and isolette transportation. The Critical Care Paramedic position will provide care to NICU and PICU patients. Additionally, this position may provide support to in-patient clinical services such as the cardiac cath lab, ICU, Emergency Department, and other clinical areas where the knowledge and skill of the Critical Care Paramedic contributes to the patient care plan. The Critical Care Paramedic may also staff UH EMS-I Event Medicine.
What You Will Do
- Practices critical clinical decision-making and delivers care to patients at the absolute top of the Paramedic’s scope of practice in a team-based care delivery model with the mission to stabilize and transport critically ill patients from any environment (roadside, residence, clinic, ED, hospital) via ground or rotor wing transport to tertiary care.
- Provides care to patients of all ages and acuity levels including but not limited to intensive care for NICU, PICU, MICU, TSICU, CICU, CTICU, STEMI, stroke, trauma, emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases, and high-risk OB patients.
- Completes appropriate charting and clinical documentation in a team-based approach.
- Supports public relations events to represent the team and University Hospitals as required.
- Displays a commitment to the Critical Care Transport Team and UH System's mission, vision, and values.
- Advocates unwavering for patient and crew safety for both ground and helicopter operations
- Supports inpatient clinical services, as needed.
- Staffs UH Event Medicine as requested.

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Equivalent / GED (Required)
Work Experience
- 3+ years of experience in a high volume, high complexity environment practicing as a paramedic. (Required)
- 3+ years in a high paced care delivery environment such as a busy 911 system, hospital ED, high volume GCCT or flight services, or other care delivery setting (Required) and
- 2+ years Exposure and or additional experience delivering care in the inpatient setting (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Excellent ability to perform triage in order to determine appropriate facility, bed type, service, etc. (Required proficiency)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral (Required proficiency)
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrates a professional demeanor when interacting with patients and customers (Required proficiency)
- Strong computer skills including all MS platforms (Required proficiency)
- Medical Assistant skill set upon completion of Orientation (Required proficiency)
- Pharmacy Technician skill set upon completion of Orientation (Required proficiency)
- Must excel at working in an interdisciplinary environment inclusive of physicians, advanced practicing providers, nursing, respiratory therapy, and other members of the clinical care team (Required proficiency)
- Working knowledge of and experience with advanced equipment consistent with the standard competencies of the Advanced Care Paramedic scope of practice inclusive of vent management, use of high flow and advanced airway management (Required proficiency)
- Able to learn and leverage advanced procedures and/or equipment to support safe and effective care such as: RSI, advanced airway management, ventilators, central lines, chest tubes, medication administration and titration, cardiac assist devices, IAPB, Impella, ECMO, and isolettes (Required proficiency)
- Completed some level of critical care paramedic course work prior to hire (Preferred proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Upon Hire (Required)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Upon Hire (Required)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 90 Days (Required)
- Paramedic with current certificate to practice in the state of Ohio Upon Hire (Required)
- NREMT-P (Preferred)
- Completion and/or good standing with an approved critical care paramedic certification, such as CCP-C or FPC within 1 Year (Required)
- International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) or Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) within 90 Days (Required)
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) course completion (100 and 200) Upon Hire (Required)
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) course completion (700 and 800) within 90 Days (Required)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 90 Days (Required)
- S.T.A.B.L.E./OB within 90 Days (Required)
- Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS) within 90 Days (Required)
