A Brief Overview
Follows laboratory policies and procedures to perform high and moderate complexity testing. Performs pre-analytical and post-analytical laboratory support functions. Demonstrates clear communication with team members to optimize laboratory operations
What You Will Do
- Accurately and efficiently performs pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical processes for laboratory testing
- Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Performs and evaluates all required quality control assessments as described in departmental policies and procedures prior to reporting patient results.
- Maintains and demonstrates competency assessment in assigned area to include oversight of the Microbiology/ Molecular Testing
- Oversight of offsite operations
- Completes all assigned mandatory assignments within allowed timelines.
- Collaborates with the laboratory supervisor to ensure laboratory compliance with all regulatory agencies by established standards
- Trains students and new team members, and is a resource for other technical team members including off-shift team members
- Assesses competency of team members as assigned.
- Leads departmental projects including Workflow development and efficiencies initiatives
- Monitors compliance to accreditation and regulatory checklist items.
- Serves as an escalation for issues that arise with team members, and internal and external clientele
- Ensures quality control and quality assurance program appropriate for the testing performed and that parameters for acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained throughout the entire testing process through pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases (TSR does not)

- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members
- Knowledge of standard laboratory policies and procedures, safety practices, and laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel applications
- Is an expert in one laboratory section/discipline
- Maintains knowledge of relevant checklists through active participation in inspection process
- Understands test validation methods and participates in the process
- Ability to effectively guide team members to improve job performance and departmental cooperation.
- Is an expert in one laboratory section/discipline to include Microbiology/Molecular
- Assesses competency of team members and their development plans as assigned
- Has a thorough understanding of CAP regulations and checklists.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.
- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Education
- Associate’s Degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology (Required) OR
- Bachelor’s Degree in a chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution. (Required) or
Bachelor’s Degree in other field (Required) and
Associate’s Degree in clinical laboratory science and certification by ASCP or equivalent are also acceptable. (Required)
Work Experience
- 3+ years experience in a highly complex laboratory setting within defined clinical disciplines i.e. Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Molecular, Microbiology, Histology, Cytology, etc. (Required)
Licenses and Certifications
- Medical Lab Technician (MLT-ASCP) MLT (ASCP) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS-ASCP) certification or equivalent required (Required Upon Hire)
