A Brief Overview
Team Lead Chemistry
Follows laboratory policies and procedures to perform high and moderate complexity testing. Performs pre-analytical and post-analytical laboratory support functions. Demonstrates clear communication with team members to optimize laboratory operations. Organizes personnel and activities in an assigned laboratory section/ discipline
What You Will Do
- Accurately and efficiently performs pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical processes for laboratory testing. Performs and evaluates all required quality control assessments as described in departmental policies and procedures prior to reporting patient results.
- Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Documents all laboratory activities according to policies and procedures and maintains and demonstrates competency assessment in assigned area
- Collaborates with the laboratory supervisor to ensure laboratory compliance with all regulatory agencies by established standards
- Trains students and new team members, and is a resource for other technical team members. Assesses competency of team members as assigned. Provides coaching and mentoring of technical team members.
- Leads departmental projects and Contributes to the policy and procedure development. Ensures up-to-date and well-developed policies and procedures are in compliance with quality and regulatory standards.
- Monitors compliance to accreditation and regulatory checklist items and serves as an escalation for issues that arise with team members, and internal and external clients
- Ensures quality control and quality assurance program appropriate for the testing performed and that parameters for acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained throughout the entire testing process through pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases (TSR does not)
- Organizes personnel and activities in assigned laboratory section/discipline including proficiency testing, competency assessment, education
- Improves compliance to accreditation and regulatory checklist items. Maintains knowledge of relevant checklists through active participation in inspection process
- Consults with internal and external customers about laboratory results, problems, and specials needs to resolve issues and promote customer service and quality patient care. Identifies gaps within assigned laboratory section/discipline and collaborates with Laboratory management to implement process and service improvements.
- Designs recommendations to improve operational efficiency and accuracy of results while maintaining laboratory productivity. Fills in for Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in their absence
Additional Responsibilities

- Initiates and maintains positive relationships with patients, customers, co-workers.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and to work effectively within role independently and with other team members
- Knowledge of standard laboratory policies and procedures, safety practices, and laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Works in multiple laboratory sections/disciplines independently (3 or more) with the ability to effectively train students and new team members
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel application is an expert in one laboratory section/discipline and familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems
- Maintains knowledge of relevant checklists through active participation in inspection process and effectively addresses issues when escalated by team members
- Understands test validation methods and participates in the process with excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to effectively manage projects to completion
- Ability to resolve conflicts amongst team members and effectively guide team members to improve job performance and departmental cooperation. Assesses competency of team members as assigned.
- Is an expert in one laboratory section/discipline and has a thorough understanding of CAP regulations and checklists.
- Solves problems and troubleshoots issues with no supervision. Works independently, with moderate manager oversight, and addresses problems and issues with minimal supervision. Has a thorough understanding of CAP regulations and checklists.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution (Required) or
- Bachelor’s Degree in other field (Required) and
- Associate’s Degree in clinical laboratory science and certification by ASCP or equivalent are also acceptable (Required)
Work Experience
- 5+ years 1 years experience in a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist III role (Required)
Licenses and Certifications
- Medical Technologist (MT-ASCP) or equivalent (Required Upon Hire) or
- Medical Lab Technician (MLT-ASCP) or equivalent (Required Upon Hire) or
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS-ASCP) or equivalent (Required Upon Hire)
