A Brief Overview
Provides expert level application support by designing application programs and services to support the optimal use of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology. The Application Architect provides technical leadership to assigned EHR staff as well as internal customers to advance the EHR system technology. Works closely with other system application teams to ensure consistent architecture, design, and implementation practices are followed. This architecture position is viewed as an internal consultant, technology advocate, mentor, and change agent. Provides 3rd level or higher escalation point and/or advisor to ensure operational issues are resolved in a timely and successful manner. This position supports the EHR Managers and Directors in managing the application technology assigned to the department.
What You Will Do
- Analyze high level requirements and apply knowledge of clinical workflows and business needs and technical architecture to determine appropriate course of action. Plan, design, and drive delivery for technologies that reduce costs or improve capabilities within the organization. Ensure consistency of tools, standards and metrics used in maintenance and design. Participate in what if scenarios with other teams to perform root cause analysis of chronic service and systems problems and outages. Identify system and process improvements and make recommendations to IT Leadership.
- Serving as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the assigned EHR applications, design application level programs and application services to optimize the use of the EHR throughout the organization. Validate code through appropriate test protocols. Document code appropriately and maintain changes through change management process. Proactively identifies and addresses scalability and performance bottlenecks to support optimal system performance
- Provide technical leadership to the EHR team and customer service teams to advance the use of the Electronic Health Record. Utilizing extensive knowledge of assigned EHR applications and module. Provide technical design recommendations based on long-term EHR organizational strategy and evolution of application technology and EHR system best practices. Use process engineering tools to apply improvement techniques during requirements gathering discussions
- Takes responsibility for personal and team technical and professional growth. Serve as a technical resource providing guidance and advice to associates on capabilities for utilizing the full capability of technology in designing effective solutions. Provides technical assistance and follow through to team members on complex problems. Review design and development work, instructing team members as needed. Provide final approvals as required for changes completed by assigned team members.
- Combine knowledge of the clinical environment with the architecture of assigned Epic application technology solutions. Bridge the current technical capabilities with the business strategy of the organization. Evaluate possible implementation of new technology, consistent with the goal of improving existing systems and technologies and in meeting the needs of the business.
- Maintain a strong knowledge of assigned Epic application area of software as well as keep up with best practices in EHR solutions and workflows. Research, collect and disseminate information on emerging EHR technologies and key learning throughout the EHR organization.
- Provide input to peers, management and customers for recommendations and alternate solutions and/or improvements. Convey and insure the understanding of technical strategies and vision to project participants. Convey problems, solutions, updates and project status to their peers, customers and management. Research and present detailed information for cost justification of new purchases. Provides feedback on team and individual performance against established assignments.
- On-Call/Off-Hours duties as required

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Education
- High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and
- Bachelor’s Degree (Preferred)
Work Experience
- 8+ years Design and Configuration Experience in Epic (applicable to assigned architect area) (Required)

5+ years Working in IT supporting EHR applications (Required)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of clinical workflows in a variety of settings. (Required proficiency)
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and maintain confidentiality (Required proficiency)
- Able to communicate with a wide variety of end users, with varying skill levels and function effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. (Required proficiency)
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills (Required proficiency)
- Strong oral, written & interpersonal communication skills (Required proficiency)
- Intermediate skills in MS Office suite, including process flow design software such as Visio (Required proficiency)
- Expert skills in either Sunrise Clinical manager configuration and integration or Enterprise EHR configuration (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN), Ohio and/or Multi State Compact License RN, RT, RD, PT, PharmD or other health care professional licensure (Preferred)
- Epic Certification applicable to assigned architect area (Required Upon Hire)
- Healthy Planet Certification (Strongly Preferred)
